A washable vacuum filter can restore airflow, but washing the wrong filter or reinstalling it damp can damage the motor. Identify the filter type first and follow the vacuum manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
Disconnect the machine
Unplug the vacuum or remove its battery before opening the dust cup. Work outdoors or over a utility sink when possible. Empty dry debris into a bag rather than rinsing a heavily loaded filter immediately, which can turn dust into paste.
Confirm the filter is washable
Foam, cartridge, and fabric filters vary by model. Some pre-filters may be rinsed while HEPA or charcoal filters must be replaced. Never wash a filter simply because it looks dirty unless the manual permits it.
Rinse gently
Use cool or lukewarm water and rinse from the clean side outward when directed. Avoid detergent, bleach, brushes, and twisting unless specifically approved. Continue until the water runs clear, then shake off excess water without wringing the material.
Dry completely before use
Place the filter in a warm, ventilated area away from direct high heat. Drying can take a full day or longer. Refit it only when no cool dampness remains, and inspect the seal so unfiltered air cannot bypass the filter.
If suction stays weak, the motor overheats, or the filter is torn, replace it or arrange service. A clean filter cannot correct a blocked hose or damaged seal.
