Window tracks collect grit, hair, and insects that make a sliding panel feel rough. Removing loose debris before wiping prevents the grit from being pushed into the rollers and gives you a clear view of clogged drainage openings.
Open and inspect
Move the panel to one side and examine the full track, including the corners and weep holes. Remove screens carefully if they block access. Do not lean out of a window or place weight on a fragile sill while cleaning.
Vacuum loose material
Use a narrow brush or crevice attachment to lift dry debris. Work from the corners toward the center and empty the vacuum if fine dust begins to blow back out. A soft brush can loosen packed grit without scratching painted or anodized surfaces.
Wipe the residue
Use a lightly damp microfiber cloth or cotton swab for the remaining film. Keep water away from hidden wall cavities and do not flood the drainage openings. If the track is sticky, use only a cleaner approved for the frame finish.
Check the movement
Slide the panel slowly and listen for grinding. Lubricate rollers only if the window manufacturer allows it; some tracks are designed to run dry. If the panel binds after cleaning, inspect the rollers and frame alignment rather than forcing it.
