How to Vacuum Dust from a Sliding Window Track

Dust and grit in a sliding window track can make the sash feel heavy and wear the rollers. Vacuuming first removes loose particles without pushing them into the drainage openings.

Open the sash safely

Move the window to a comfortable position and keep fingers clear of pinch points. If the sash must be removed, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Vacuum the track

Use a crevice tool along both rails and corners. Brush stubborn grit loose while keeping the vacuum nearby.

Wipe and inspect drainage

Use a damp cloth on the remaining film and confirm the weep holes are open. Do not block them with caulk or packed debris.

Check movement

Slide the sash several times. If it still binds, the rollers or frame may need adjustment rather than more lubricant.
