How to Sort a Crowded Kitchen Junk Drawer

A kitchen junk drawer becomes difficult to use when unrelated items pile on top of one another. A short reset can return the drawer to useful everyday storage while keeping sharp objects, batteries, and small hardware from becoming hidden hazards.

Empty and inspect

Place everything on a clear surface and vacuum the drawer. Separate useful items, duplicates, rubbish, and objects that belong in another room. Check batteries for corrosion and discard damaged items through the proper local route.

Group by task

Create small groups for writing tools, fasteners, measuring items, clips, and household odds and ends. Keep knives, blades, and matches out of a general drawer where they can be reached accidentally.

Fit simple dividers

Use shallow trays that leave enough clearance for the drawer to close. Put frequently used items near the front and keep the heaviest objects from overloading the runners. Avoid filling every gap so new items have a temporary home.

Maintain the reset

Return each item to its group and review the drawer when a section becomes crowded. Remove duplicates before adding organizers. A visible, lightly filled drawer is easier to maintain than a tightly packed one.
