How to Replace a Worn Exterior Door Sweep

A worn door sweep lets drafts, dust, and insects pass beneath an exterior door. Replacing it is a practical maintenance job when the door and threshold are still sound.

Inspect the existing sweep

Open the door and check whether the sweep is screwed on, slid into a channel, or attached as part of the door bottom. Measure the door width and note the old profile.

Remove and clean

Take off the old sweep and brush dirt from the bottom edge. Check that the threshold is level and free of screws or raised damage.

Fit the replacement

Cut the sweep to length if required, keeping the seal continuous at both ends. Position it so the flexible edge contacts the threshold lightly without dragging.

Test the door

Close the door several times and confirm it latches without force. Adjust the sweep if it folds, catches, or leaves a visible gap.
