Replacing a refrigerator water filter is simple when you identify the correct cartridge, release pressure, and keep a towel under the housing. A careful change protects the dispenser and prevents a small trapped spill from reaching the floor.
Confirm the filter first
Read the model number on the old cartridge or inside the refrigerator manual. Do not rely on appearance alone because similar filters may use different fittings. Purchase a compatible certified replacement and wash your hands before handling it.
Release pressure
Turn off the dispenser and place a towel under the filter housing. Follow the refrigerator instructions for turning or pressing the cartridge to release it. Some models need the water supply closed, while others use an internal bypass. Never force a stuck filter with pliers.
Install and flush
Remove protective caps from the new cartridge, align the arrows or tabs, and lock it into place. Restore the supply if it was closed, then dispense the volume recommended by the manufacturer into a container. The first water may contain air or carbon dust and should not be served.
Check the seal
Inspect around the housing while the dispenser runs and again after it stops. Reset the filter indicator only after the new cartridge is installed. If water continues to drip, remove the cartridge and check its alignment rather than tightening random fittings.
Write the installation date on the filter box and replace it on the manufacturer’s schedule or sooner if taste, flow, or odor changes.
