A worn hose connector washer can cause a leak even when the fitting is tightened. Replacing the small rubber washer is a quick repair that protects the spigot connection and prevents water from spraying around the coupling.
Shut off water and disconnect
Close the spigot, release pressure, and unscrew the hose or nozzle. Look inside the female connector for the existing washer and any grit.
Match the replacement
Use a washer sized for the connector and made for outdoor water use. A washer that is too thin may leak, while one that is too thick may prevent the fitting from seating.
Clean the sealing surfaces
Rinse sand and mineral deposits from the threads and washer seat. Do not use thread tape to compensate for a missing or damaged hose washer.
Test without overtightening
Seat the washer flat, thread the fitting by hand, and open the spigot slowly. Tighten only enough to stop seepage.
