A squeaky hinge usually needs cleaning and a small amount of suitable lubricant, not a forceful adjustment. Working one hinge at a time keeps the door supported and helps identify whether the noise comes from the pin, loose screws, or a door that is rubbing the frame.
Locate the sound
Open and close the door slowly while listening at each hinge. Check that the screws are snug and that the hinge leaves sit flat against the jamb and door. A squeak accompanied by a sagging door may indicate alignment trouble rather than simple dry metal.
Protect the surface
Place a folded cloth beneath the hinge and use a product intended for hinges or light mechanical lubrication. Apply a small amount at the pin joint, then move the door gradually to distribute it. Avoid spraying broadly onto painted trim, flooring, or the door face.
Clean excess material
Wipe away drips and dust that cling to the hinge. If the hinge pin is designed to be removed, support the door and follow the manufacturer’s guidance; do not hammer a pin upward against a fragile finish or remove multiple pins at once.
Recheck alignment
Operate the door several times and watch the reveal around the frame. If it still rubs, the screws pull out, or the hinge is bent, repair the mounting or replace the hinge. A lubricant can quiet a symptom but cannot correct a structural shift.
