Finding a stud gives a shelf fastener stronger wood to grip. Marking the location accurately prevents a row of unnecessary holes and helps the shelf sit level.
Scan and confirm
Use a stud finder according to its instructions, then confirm the result by checking nearby outlets or tapping carefully. Stud spacing is often regular but should not be assumed.
Mark lightly
Make a small pencil mark at the center of the stud and extend a short level reference line. Avoid relying on a mark at the edge, where a screw can miss the framing.
Check utilities
Before drilling, consider plumbing and electrical routes. Use fasteners suited to the shelf and load, and stop if the drill meets unexpected resistance.
Test the mounting
Install one fastener, check level, and then add the remaining fasteners. Do not overload a shelf simply because it is attached to one stud.
