Horizontal blinds collect dust along both faces of every slat, and rushed cleaning can bend the slats or spread dust into the room. A gentle top-to-bottom method keeps the work controlled and protects the operating cords.
Close and support the blinds
Lower the blinds to a comfortable height and tilt the slats so one surface faces you. Hold the bottom rail lightly rather than pulling on the cords. Check the manufacturer’s care guidance, especially for wood, woven, or painted blinds.
Remove loose dust first
Use a soft microfiber duster or a vacuum with a brush attachment on low suction. Work from the top down and move in the direction the slats naturally support. Do not drag a stiff nozzle across the edges or force the slats to a sharper angle.
Handle marks with minimal moisture
For washable vinyl or aluminum, use a barely damp microfiber cloth and support each section as you wipe. Avoid soaking the headrail, cords, or motorized controls. Wood blinds should be cleaned with the approved dry or wood-safe method rather than a wet household spray.
Finish both faces and the sill
Reverse the tilt and repeat from the top down. Wipe the windowsill and nearby trim after the blinds so loosened dust is not left below them. Open the blinds and allow any dampness to dry before closing them again.
If slats are cracked, cords are frayed, or a motorized blind behaves unpredictably, stop using the mechanism and arrange repair. Cleaning should never require forcing a jammed blind.
