How to Clean Lint from a Dryer Filter Housing

Lint can collect below a dryer’s removable screen and restrict airflow even when the screen looks clean. Cleaning the housing carefully helps the dryer exhaust properly and reduces heat buildup.

Disconnect before reaching inside

Turn the dryer off and disconnect power before using a vacuum near the filter opening. Never push a tool deep into the blower area.

Vacuum the housing

Remove the lint screen and use a narrow vacuum attachment to reach the accessible channel. Work slowly so the nozzle does not damage the screen frame or internal sensor.

Clean the screen

Wash the screen occasionally with warm water and mild detergent to remove invisible fabric-softener film. Let it dry completely before returning it.

Watch drying performance

Longer drying times or excessive heat may indicate a blocked vent beyond the housing. Have the exhaust path inspected rather than relying only on frequent screen cleaning.
