Overfilled refrigerator door shelves can keep containers from sitting securely and may press against the gasket. Cleaning and reorganizing the shelves protects the seal and makes spills easier to notice.
Remove and sort items
Take out containers one shelf at a time and discard expired or leaking items. Keep heavy bottles low and avoid placing tall containers where they contact the door frame.
Wash removable shelves
Use warm water and mild detergent, allowing cold glass to warm gradually to avoid thermal shock. Dry the shelf edges and tracks before reinstalling.
Wipe the gasket
Clean the rubber seal and the mating surface. Check that no container or shelf edge prevents the door from closing evenly.
Test the closure
Close the door gently and confirm the gasket contacts around the perimeter. Recheck after the refrigerator has returned to its normal temperature.
