A washable vacuum filter protects the motor and helps the machine maintain suction, but washing the wrong filter or reinstalling it wet can cause damage. Check the appliance instructions first and separate washable foam or fabric parts from filters that must be replaced.
Identify the filter
Unplug the vacuum and locate the filter by following the manual. Photograph its orientation before removal. Some machines use a washable prefilter and a disposable fine-particle filter together, so never assume every filter can go under the tap.
Remove dry debris
Take the filter outdoors and tap or brush loose dust away from your face. Wear a mask if the dust is heavy. Avoid compressed air indoors because it can drive fine particles deeper into the material or spread them around the room.
Rinse gently
Rinse a washable filter with cool or lukewarm water until the runoff is clear. Do not use detergent unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Squeeze foam gently without twisting and keep paper, electronics, and sealed filter housings dry.
Dry completely
Place the filter in a warm, ventilated area away from direct high heat. Drying may take a full day or longer. Reinstall only when it is completely dry and seated correctly. If the filter is torn, permanently clogged, or cannot dry clean, replace it with the specified part.
