A dusty bathroom exhaust grille can restrict airflow and make the fan sound louder than usual. Cleaning the cover is a simple task when power is off, the ladder is stable, and the grille is allowed to dry completely before it goes back on the ceiling.
Prepare safely
Switch off the fan and disconnect power at the breaker when the cover must be removed. Use a stable step ladder on a dry floor and keep one hand free for balance. If the cover is damaged or the housing shows heat marks, stop and arrange a deeper inspection.
Remove loose dust
Support the grille while releasing its springs or screws. Vacuum both sides with a brush attachment before washing. This keeps a thick layer of lint from turning into paste and prevents dust from falling into the motor housing.
Wash and dry the cover
Clean a washable plastic grille with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse it well and let it dry fully on a towel. Wipe the surrounding ceiling and housing edge with a barely damp cloth; never spray cleaner into the fan opening.
Restore airflow
Refit the dry grille evenly, restore power, and listen for normal operation. Hold a tissue near the grille to confirm air is moving. If the fan still rattles, barely moves air, or trips the breaker, leave it off and call a qualified electrician.
